Farid Mehovic, Ph.D.

Farid Mehovic received his doctorate from UCLA Computer Science Department in 1989, in the area of systems and database performance. After two years of full-time consulting in the development of an on-line information system in Hermosa Beach, CA, he joined the IBM Software Development Lab in Dallas for four years. At IBM, he was on staff of a lab-wide systems performance group, which provided performance guidance to the Lab's software development. Following that, he joined SABRE Group's R&D Lab from the Fall 1994 through Summer 1998 and then consulted for the SABRE Development Division for a year, where he implemented a complex airline fares system for a large customer. Since then and through June 2003 he consulted for the State of Illinois, leading the implementation of the Department of Human Services Data Warehouse.

At SABRE, he led several critical technological advances aimed at protecting SABRE’s market share and laying groundwork to new business opportunities in travel industry, specifically in airline reservation and pricing systems. His major areas of contribution were in systems and databases involving very large data volumes, extremely high transaction rates, object-relational and relational technologies, open systems, strategic development, system migration, and Year 2000 compliance.

Farid implemented one of his prototypes, the airline fares management system, for the Russian airline computer reservations system company, a multi-million dollar project. He architected the system, designed the database, and led the project from design to production. The platform was relational and open systems, using DB2 product.

He recently completed design and development of a large scale data warehouse system for State of Illinois Department of Human Services, a multi-terabyte volume system, with over 20 various data sources, including flat binary/text files, IMS, DB2/MVS, and Oracle.

His practical expertise includes information systems implementation including requirements analysis, data modeling, prototyping, database design, data warehouse design and implementation, system development, and performance evaluation and benchmarking. Hands-on experience includes database products Informix, DB2, Oracle, operating systems AIX, Solaris, Digital Unix, languages SQL, ESQL/C, C, Unix shell, Perl, computer systems SP2, RS/6000, Sparc, Alpha Server.
